behind god's back
Based on a short story written by Alice Walker, Judyann developed this short film while a member of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women. Retitled “Behind God’s Back”, it chronicles the brutal coming of age of an African-American girl growing up in America’s deep South.
a private act
The film A Private Act is based on the one-act play by Thomas Gibbons, which Judy directed for the Robey Theatre in 2007 as part of the Los Angeles Theatre Center's "Medley of One Act Plays". Thescreenplay was adapted in collaboration with Suzanne Robertson and Christian Elder. The film stars actors Cástulo Guerra and Jossara Jinaro, both of whom appeared in the original production of the play. The story centers around Argentina's notorious and bloody "Dirty War," a period of widespread torture and political repression which lasted from 1976 to 1983. A Private Act is a haunting exploration of the pyschological trauma of torture.
